The brief was to maximise the utility of this 1-bedroom apartment to accomplish a private sleeping area (as the occupants can have different waking and working times), a dedicated work from home space, a generous kitchen (as the occupants enjoy cooking at home) and the flexibility of a second sleeping area (as the occupants have family out of town who stay).
The 2-storey floor plan naturally allowed privacy between the living and primary sleeping zones, however the only way we could achieve all in the brief was to have multiple functions overlap within each zone.
Upstairs has a large dedicated work from home area, bedroom and bathroom with walk in robe. We used a curtain to close off the primary sleeping zone to accommodate the occupants’ different schedules and allow privacy when guests stay downstairs. Downstairs has living, dining and kitchen spaces with extensive storage and integrated uses (e.g. laundry). There is a murphy bed that folds out over the custom sofa, providing guests with the privacy of the entire downstairs space.
Given the multiple uses within a confined space, the occupants opted for a minimal and muted form to avoid cramping and clutter, without compromising on function.

The brief was to accentuate natural light throughout the apartment and grow the sense of space within what was previously a compromised design with multiple separate rooms all within a total envelope of just 44 sqm. Plus, the brief included the addition of a dedicated work from home space to accommodate the occupants’ flexible work arrangements.
In this instance, the occupants were working to a tight budget. This meant that function was prioritised over form to allow the occupants to make the most of the lively, urban neighbourhood at their doorstep. The original floor plan had a disproportionately large bedroom and pokey separate kitchen, so multiple walls were deleted and replaced with structural beams to open the kitchen/living/dining space and create a second larger opening to the sleeping zone. Each space benefits from increased natural light borrowed from one another.
A function wall was installed along one length of the living room, creating a quasi-foyer at the entrance with open display shelving, ample storage, and a dedicated work from home set-up. Form ply was chosen as the predominant joinery material for its pre-finished ruggedness, low cost, and harmonisation with the industrial look and feel of the exposed structural beams.
